A challenge
Björkliden Arctic Mountain Marathon, BAMM, is a two-day mountain orienteering where two-person teams spend the night on the mountain. The teams carry all the equipment required for two tough days and a night on the mountain. The exception is BAMM 30 for which the organizer will transport tent and sleeping bag to the night camp. Participants in BAMM 30 will therefore have a little lighter rucksack.
On Friday morning before the start, maps and routes are distributed and teams can begin planning their route choices. All teams start at the same time. After all checkpoints are taken the teams arrives to the night camp where all teams spend the night. At day 2 the best teams starts with chasing start, leading team starts first and after that following teams will start according to results from day 1. Teams more than one hour behind starts in a mass start before the chasing start. The finish is in Björkliden where shower, sauna and massage is waiting. In the evening there is a pricegiving cermony and dinner. Those who feel fit can continue the night in the bar.
For those who don't feel ready for a 2-day-event with overnight in the mountains, there is BAMM One day were you can try BAMM during one day and therefor you don't have to overnight.
A unique environment
124 miles north of the Arctic circle Björkliden is beautifully situated between mighty mountains in Europe's last wilderness. In these wild and beautiful surroundings the competitors will experience two exiting days.
For whom?
BAMM has something for all with interesting challenges and real natural experiences! BAMM 30 is a good distance to start with, BAMM 50 is for those who want a greater challenge where both good physique and orienteering skills are required and BAMM 70 is probably the toughest mountain marathon in Sweden.
BAMM is the original
The originator of this competition, Erik Ahlström, was first in Sweden with this kind of event. The competition was arranged for the first time in 1994, at that time under the name BIMM (Björkliden International Mountain Marathon). Over the years the competition has had some other names but the format has always been more or less the same. Nowdays there are similar competitions but the one in Björkliden was first.
